NACWC Conducts Awareness Program on Safe Handling of Household Chemicals at Ministry of Defence

The National Authority for the Implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (NACWC) conducted a one-day awareness program on the Safe Handling of Household Chemicals and Chemical Safety and Security on Thursday (June 12) at the Nandimitra Conference Hall, Ministry of Defence. Eighty personnel representing various departments of the Ministry participated in the session, which aimed to strengthen awareness on chemical safety, especially in domestic and institutional settings, and to promote best practices in chemical security. The program was delivered in two segments. The first focused on the safe use of household chemicals, where participants were briefed on the risks associated with commonly used substances such as cleaning agents and disinfectants. Topics included proper labeling, storage, use of personal protective equipment and environmental precautions. The second part addressed chemical security within the Ministry premises. Emphasis was placed on preventing the misuse of chemicals, particularly in high-security environments. Participants were guided on implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs), maintaining chemical inventories, and being vigilant about suspicious activity. Real-world case studies were used to highlight lessons learned and practical safeguards. The session concluded with a lively question-and-answer forum, where participants engaged with NACWC experts on topics including hazard communication, incident response and policy measures for chemical safety. The initiative reflects NACWC’s ongoing commitment to promoting chemical safety and fulfilling Sri Lanka’s obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention. Similar training programs are planned across other government sectors to foster a culture of chemical safety and security.
